Remo Stars extended their lead at the top of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings to five points after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 2021 champions, Akwa United at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.

The Ikenne side came from behind to claim all three points, with Samuel Anaekwe and midfielder Adadayo Olamilekan scoring in the second half to turn the game in their favor.
Akwa United took an early lead in the sixth minute through Uche Sebastine, but Remo Stars responded in the 74th minute before sealing the win with Olamilekan’s goal 10 minutes later, leaving Akwa’s relegation hopes in further jeopardy.

Despite a mid-season break that offered both teams a fresh start, Akwa United’s struggles continued. The hosts have now suffered 11 defeats this season, with five of those losses coming at home, leaving them languishing in 19th place with just 19 points from 20 games.

For Remo Stars, the win marked a perfect start to the second half of the season as they chase their first-ever league title. The Sky Blue Stars now sit comfortably atop the table with 39 points, while 2022 champions Rivers United, who lost 2-1 to Plateau United on Sunday, remain in second place with 24 points from the same number of matches.
Remo Stars will continue their title push on Wednesday when they host Abia Warriors in Ikenne, followed by a home clash against Sunshine Stars on Saturday.
