The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to hold a nationwide protest on February 4 against the approved 50% telecom tariff hike.

The decision to protest was made during the NLC’s ongoing National Administrative Council meeting.

According to NLC President Joe Ajaero, the tariff hike is a clear assault on the welfare of Nigerian workers and masses, who are already grappling with unprecedented economic hardship.

Ajaero emphasized that telecommunication services are essential for daily life, yet an average Nigerian worker spends around 10% of their wages on telecom charges.

The NLC argues that the 50% tariff hike will worsen poverty levels across the country, with a worker earning the minimum wage of N70,000 facing an unsustainable increase from N7,000 to N10,500 per month.

The NLC has called on the government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Assembly to stop the implementation of the hike and engage in a dialogue to find a more humane solution.
