Legendary coach, Claude Le Roy, who led Cameroon to victory at AFCON 1988, has tipped Nigeria as one of the favorites for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), alongside hosts, Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Egypt, and Algeria.

The tournament is set to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, across six cities in Morocco. Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, finished as runners-up at the last edition, losing to Ivory Coast in the final. The Super Eagles will be aiming for a fourth continental crown after being drawn in a group alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

With an impressive AFCON history—boasting 16 medals (3 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze)—Nigeria remains a strong force in African football. Le Roy believes they are well-positioned for another deep tournament run.
“Logically, Morocco are the biggest favorites,” Le Roy told LeSitelnfo. “Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Algeria… Egypt is always a formidable opponent. We must also watch out for South Africa, which continues to improve under a very good coach. Cameroon is also a tough competitor.”
Le Roy famously guided Cameroon to a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the 1988 AFCON final—the last time Morocco hosted the tournament. That loss, decided by an Emmanuel Kundé penalty, remains one of Nigeria’s most painful AFCON moments.
Now 77, Le Roy is eager to return to the country where he enjoyed his greatest coaching triumph. “Today, Morocco is capable of organizing a World Cup. The next AFCON will be exceptional in a country that I love, with a rich football culture. Returning there brings back great memories,” he said.
Under new head coach, Éric Chelle, the Super Eagles will kick off their campaign against Tanzania on December 23 at the Fez Stadium in Fez.
- December 23: Nigeria vs Tanzania (Fez Stadium, Fez)
- December 27: Nigeria vs Tunisia (Fez Stadium, Fez)
- December 30: Nigeria vs Uganda (Venue TBD)
With high expectations and a talented squad, Nigeria will look to make a strong statement in Morocco 2025.
