Representatives of the Catholic Church in the Democratic Republic of Congo met with rebel leader Corneille Nangaa in Goma on Wednesday as M23 forces, backed by Rwanda, continued their advance.
The meeting aimed to push for dialogue and a ceasefire while advocating for the reopening of Goma’s airport and port.
Meanwhile, M23 seized the town of Ihusi, raising fears of further conflict.
President Felix Tshisekedi expressed openness to the Church’s mediation efforts but stressed inclusivity.
The ongoing clashes have displaced over a million people and heightened regional tensions, with Rwanda denying direct involvement despite accusations.
