Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef Ahmed Al-Sharif traveled to Tehran on Monday to meet with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in a bid to reinforce diplomatic relations between Sudan and Iran.
During their discussions, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to deepening ties with Sudan, highlighting its significance as a key Arab and Islamic nation.
He also expressed concerns over Sudan’s ongoing internal conflict, which has caused extensive humanitarian suffering and infrastructure damage.
The Iranian diplomat emphasized the need to safeguard Sudan’s sovereignty, urging an end to foreign interference and calling for conditions that would facilitate a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
The ongoing war in Sudan has already claimed over 28,000 lives, displaced millions, and pushed communities to the brink of famine.
Reports from the United Nations and human rights organizations indicate widespread atrocities, including ethnically motivated killings and sexual violence.
The International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, while the United States has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its affiliates of committing acts of genocide.
As Sudan grapples with escalating violence and deepening humanitarian concerns, its renewed engagement with Iran signals an effort to garner diplomatic support amid the crisis.
