Mauritius has closed its international airport as a precautionary measure after the government’s weather department issued a category 3 cyclone warning for the Indian Ocean island.
The airport’s operator, Airports of Mauritius Ltd, announced that the airport would be shut down from 1910 local time (1510 GMT) on Wednesday.
This decision was made in response to the Mauritius Meteorological Services’ warning about tropical storm Garance, which is intensifying and expected to bring winds of up to 70 km per hour early on Thursday.
