The Democratic Republic of Congo government has announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of three rebel leaders.

Corneille Nangaa, a former head of DR Congo’s electoral commission, now leads the Congo River Alliance, which includes the M23 rebel group.

The bounty also targets M23 leaders Sultani Makenga and Bertrand Bisimwa.

The three men were prosecuted in absentia by a military court last year and received death sentences for treason.

Despite this, the chances of their arrest appear slim, given the Rwandan-backed rebels’ significant control over eastern DR Congo.

President Félix Tshisekedi is instead focusing on building international pressure for Rwanda to face sanctions for backing the rebels.

A report by UN experts revealed that up to 4,000 Rwanda troops were working with the M23 in DR Congo last year.

The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

DR Congo accuses Rwanda of attempting to control its minerals, including gold and coltan, used in consumer electronics.
