Fear has gripped the Jato Aka community in Benue State’s Kwande Local Government Area, prompting thousands of residents to flee their homes due to repeated invasions by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The latest attack occurred on Saturday, March 16, 2025, with residents reporting that unfamiliar faces were seen in the community before the invasion.
Local guards have increased their vigilance, interrogating strangers and arresting those with unconvincing responses. However, the situation escalated when youth in the area clashed with police, who were called to intervene.
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the attack, but refuted claims that suspects were handed over to the police. Residents continue to flee the community, seeking refuge elsewhere, as tensions remain high.
The community has called on the government and security agencies to take decisive action to prevent Jato Aka from becoming another community overrun by armed herdsmen in the state.
