Unknown gunmen have attacked a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) team in the Igbomotoru community, Bayelsa State, killing one officer and injuring three others.
The incident occurred while the officers were returning from a clampdown operation on Friday.
NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed the attack, stating that a comprehensive report is still pending.
This recent attack highlights ongoing security concerns in Bayelsa State, which has experienced similar incidents in the past year.
In April 2024, gunmen ambushed soldiers along the Nembe-Brass Road, killing three and prompting a military manhunt.
Additionally, pirates attacked a navy patrol boat in February 2024, and unknown gunmen killed two police officers at a checkpoint in Yenagoa in December 2023.
The Igbomotoru community, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, has a history of militant activity.
In March 2024, the military raided the area after suspects linked to the killing of 17 soldiers in Delta State’s Okuama community were traced there. These incidents underscore the persistent insecurity in the region.
