The Nigerian Correctional Service has denied reports of a bomb explosion at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, stating that the incident involving detainee Charles Okah was a false alarm.

According to authorities, Okah set his mattress on fire using a box of matches in an attempt to cause panic within the facility.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, and officials quickly responded to extinguish the fire.

A search of Okah’s cell revealed a box of matches, which he allegedly obtained during an Easter church service. Okah was treated for injuries and is currently recuperating.

Authorities dismissed rumors of absent night duty officers, confirming that personnel responded swiftly to contain the situation.

They described Okah as a controversial inmate who frequently creates trouble. Okah has been held at the facility since March 16, 2025.
