Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a decisive step against insecurity by suspending the traditional ruler of Uwano Kingdom in Agenebode, Estako East Local Government Area. Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor, the Okumagbe of Uwano, was indefinitely removed from office following a surge in kidnappings and violent crimes in his domain.
The governor’s action came after the arrest of the monarch’s secretary, Chief Peter Omiogbemhi, in connection with the killing of a palace chief, John Ikhamate. Authorities are investigating the secretary’s alleged involvement in the recent wave of abductions and attacks plaguing the community.
A statement by Governor Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, confirmed the suspension, emphasizing the administration’s zero-tolerance stance on security breaches. “The government will not tolerate any form of complicity in criminal activities, even from traditional institutions,” the statement read.
Residents of Uwano Kingdom have long complained about rising insecurity, with many linking the violence to local power struggles. The governor’s intervention has been met with mixed reactions—some praising the move as necessary, while others fear it may escalate tensions.
Security agencies have intensified operations in the area, with further arrests expected as investigations continue.
