Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has cut short his visit to South Africa following a devastating Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, which killed at least nine people and injured over 80, including children.
After meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Zelenskyy announced his immediate return to Ukraine, stressing the need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
The visit marks a diplomatic breakthrough in Zelenskyy’s efforts to counter Russia’s growing influence in Africa, and comes after a shift in the geopolitical landscape, with both countries finding common ground in their strained relations with Washington.
South Africa’s non-aligned position has positioned it as a potential mediator in the conflict.
However, US President Donald Trump criticized Zelenskyy for refusing to recognize Russian control over Crimea, claiming it would prolong the conflict.
US Vice-President JD Vance outlined a potential deal, suggesting a freeze on territorial lines, which would require both Ukraine and Russia to give up some territory.
Zelenskyy has consistently rejected giving up Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.
Rescue operations are ongoing in Kyiv, with officials reporting dozens injured in the attack.
The situation remains dire, with international attention focused on the escalating conflict.
