According to a statement from the Sovereignty Council, UN Special Envoy Ramtane Lamamra delivered the message in Port Sudan during a meeting attended by Sudan’s Acting Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, Idris Ismail.

Speaking to the press, Ismail said the message addressed the UN’s role in Sudan amid ongoing conflict and efforts toward peace.

Al-Burhan reiterated Sudan’s confidence in the United Nations’ ability to play a constructive role in resolving the country’s crisis and emphasized the government’s support for the UN’s peace-building efforts. He also affirmed Sudan’s readiness to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.

Lamamra expressed optimism about the prospects for peace and stability in Sudan, which he said are essential for national reconstruction and improving the lives of Sudanese citizens. He reaffirmed the UN’s continued support for Sudan’s path to a peaceful and prosperous future.

Details regarding the timing and duration of Lamamra’s visit were not disclosed.

Sudan has been mired in conflict since April 15, 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced 15 million people, according to the UN and local officials. However, some estimates, including research by U.S.-based scholars, suggest the death toll may be as high as 130,000.
