President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, has been elected as a council member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Orbih secured the position during the BWF Annual General Meeting held on Saturday, April 26, in Xiamen, China, where he emerged victorious against strong contenders from across Africa. He now joins Cameroon’s Odette Engoulou as one of Africa’s representatives on the BWF Council, while Zimbabwe’s Chipo Zumburani and Egypt’s Hadia ElSaid were unsuccessful.

Expressing gratitude, Orbih said, “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by my peers across the badminton world. I look forward to delivering quality representation, driving development initiatives, and strengthening badminton’s global reach over the next four years.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to being a strong voice for Africa on the global stage and acknowledged the critical support he received from Nigeria’s government and the Nigerian Sports Commission (NSC).

“The Chairman and the Director General of the NSC monitored the entire process. I’m grateful for their involvement and confident Nigeria will benefit from this. From the day I declared my intentions, the BFN board members have been supportive, and I promise not to disappoint them,” he added.
