South Africa marked Freedom Day on April 27, celebrating 31 years since the nation’s first democratic elections in 1994, which ended apartheid and ushered in a new era of inclusivity and reconciliation. The nation’s historic achievement was highlighted during a speech by the President, who addressed ministers, lawmakers, judges, community leaders, and fellow citizens at the official commemoration.

The Address, which was read by Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Mr. Gwede Mantashe on behalf of the President began with reflecting on the country’s long and painful history, which was scarred by colonialism and apartheid. He praised the nation’s collective resilience and the courage of South Africans who, despite tensions and fears of conflict, stood together in unity to vote in the first non-racial elections. The 1994 elections, he noted, marked a moment of healing, reconciliation, and the restoration of dignity for all South Africans, both black and white.

He acknowledged the challenges of the country’s past and how these sacrifices led to the peaceful transition of power, becoming a global beacon for reconciliation and dialogue. “We showed the world that it was indeed possible to move beyond a bitter history,” he said, emphasizing the national commitment to peace over conflict, and healing over hatred.

Ramaphosa also paid tribute to those who fought for justice, recalling key figures like Beyers Naude and others who challenged apartheid and worked for a more just South Africa. The President reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to peace globally, highlighting the country’s engagement in international issues such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Despite the celebrations, Ramaphosa acknowledged that South Africa still faces significant challenges. Poverty, unemployment, and inequality remain pervasive, and the country’s wealth continues to be concentrated in the hands of a few. He emphasized that South Africa must build an economy that benefits all its citizens, ensuring opportunities for the poor and marginalized.

Addressing these issues, Ramaphosa outlined key government priorities: driving inclusive growth, reducing poverty, and building a capable, ethical state. He also announced the launch of an inclusive National Dialogue, inviting all sectors of society to participate in shaping South Africa’s future.

“Let us recommit ourselves to the ideals of our Constitution and stand firm against corruption, criminality, and the violence that affects our women and children,” Ramaphosa urged.

As the country continues its journey toward greater equity, he called on South Africans to stand united in confronting the challenges that lie ahead, ensuring that the flame of freedom remains alive for future generations.

In closing, Ramaphosa wished all South Africans a blessed Freedom Day, thanking the citizens for their unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress.
