The Russian Football Union has confirmed that Russia will welcome Nigeria to the iconic Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on June 6 for an international friendly match.

The encounter will mark the first-ever senior international meeting between the two nations.

While Russia remains unranked by FIFA following its suspension from international competitions, the national team is taking steps to re-establish itself on the global stage. Meanwhile, Nigeria, currently ranked 43rd in the latest FIFA world rankings, views the match as vital preparation for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The fixture also signals Russia’s return to their main stadium for the first time since a goalless draw with Croatia during a 2022 World Cup qualifier in September 2021. Luzhniki Stadium, famed for hosting the 2018 World Cup final, stands as one of Europe’s most historic football venues.

Following the friendly against Nigeria, Russia’s national team, coached by Valery Karpin, is set to face Belarus on June 10 in Minsk.

The clash in Moscow could hold special significance for Nigerian players with connections to Russian football. Super Eagles stars Ahmed Musa and Chidera Ejuke, both former players for Russian club CSKA Moscow, are familiar with the atmosphere and energy that Luzhniki offers.

Before the showdown with Russia, Nigeria will compete in the Unity Cup — an invitational tournament in May featuring African rivals Ghana, the Reggae Boyz of Jamaica, and the Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago. The Super Eagles are set to open their campaign with a thrilling encounter against Ghana at London’s Gtech Community Stadium on May 28.

With two high-profile matches on the horizon, head coach Eric Chelle will be looking to fine-tune his squad and test tactical variations ahead of a demanding international schedule.
