Prominent business executive and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, has declared a hunger strike while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Achimugu was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Tuesday morning.
According to her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, Achimugu had voluntarily returned from London to honor the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested despite her intention to cooperate.
The EFCC had declared Achimugu wanted in March over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
Achimugu’s lawyer described her arrest as contrary to the rule of law and stated that she is a prisoner of conscience. Efforts to reach the EFCC spokesman were unsuccessful.
Achimugu is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, a consortium with interests in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.
