Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been named the top African player in France’s Ligue 1, earning the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foé award for the 2024 season. Hakimi’s performances helped PSG secure their 13th Ligue 1 title and reach the Champions League final, solidifying his reputation as one of the world’s best right-backs.

The 26-year-old Moroccan triumphed over strong competition from Nice’s Evann Guessand (Ivory Coast) and Senegal’s Habib Diarra, who plays for Strasbourg. Hakimi, who was also nominated for the award last year, expressed his pride at receiving the honor.
“I’m really happy to see all the work I’ve done over the years rewarded with this prize. It makes me very proud,” Hakimi said in an interview with French broadcaster RFI, which presented him with the award.
The Marc-Vivien Foé prize, named after the late Cameroon footballer Marc-Vivien Foé, who tragically passed away in 2003 at age 28, is awarded annually to the best African player in Ligue 1. Hakimi is the second defender to win the accolade, following Congolese player Chancel Mbemba in 2022.

This marks Hakimi’s fourth win for Morocco, after previous victories by Marouane Chamakh (2009), Younès Belhanda (2012), and Sofiane Boufal (2016).
Despite facing legal challenges, including rape charges in March 2023—accusations he vehemently denies—Hakimi has maintained strong support from fans and the football community.

Hakimi has been instrumental for PSG this season, contributing 4 goals and 6 assists in Ligue 1. His efforts have helped PSG prepare for upcoming high-stakes matches, including the French Cup final against Reims on May 24 and the Champions League final against Inter Milan on May 31. Additionally, Hakimi is expected to play a key role for Morocco in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in December.
