In a significant political development, three senators from Kebbi State have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a blow to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the region. The defectors are Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central; Yahaya Abdullahi, representing Kebbi North; and Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi South.
The defection was announced during Tuesday’s plenary session, with Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, reading the letters of defection. The APC’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and Kebbi State’s Governor, Nasir Idris, were present at the session to witness the historic move.
Jibrin emphasized that the defection represents a major gain for the APC, as it strengthens the party’s presence in Kebbi ahead of the 2027 general elections. “This marks a clear sign of more victories for the APC in the future. The current political climate is in favor of progressive politics, and with our progressive president at the helm, we are certain of future electoral successes,” Jibrin said.
The senators explained their decision to leave the PDP by citing internal crises and unresolved divisions within the party in Kebbi. They expressed hope that the APC’s platform would offer them a more stable and conducive environment for political progress.
Governor Nasir Idris echoed Jibrin’s sentiments, calling the defection a “momentous occasion” for both the APC and the people of Kebbi. He added that the move would further solidify the party’s dominance in the state and contribute to its success at the national level.
This development also comes at a time when the APC is preparing for the upcoming electoral battles, with party leaders hopeful that more defections could follow in the coming months. The Kebbi senators’ defection is viewed as part of the broader trend of political realignments within Nigeria’s political parties, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
