The Anambra State Police Command has successfully re-arrested Ikemefuna Ossai, a suspect in the tragic murder of Justice Azuka, a lawmaker from the Onitsha North constituency. Azuka was killed by gunmen while returning home for Christmas last year, and his body was discovered a month later on the Second Niger Bridge after being held captive.
Ossai had escaped from police custody in February along with another suspect, sparking widespread calls for justice. Following a thorough intelligence-driven operation, Ossai was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State.
Upon sighting the police, the suspect attempted to flee but was caught after a brief struggle, sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg. The police have since expressed regret over the operational errors that allowed the initial escape and have vowed to bring all involved parties to justice.
The Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the force tracked Ossai across several states and even into a neighboring West African country. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in Azuka’s murder.
The police have briefed the slain lawmaker’s family and the leadership of the Anambra State House of Assembly about the recent developments.
