Ogun State will officially receive the Torch of Unity on Thursday ahead of the National Sports Festival, which begins in Abeokuta on Friday, May 16. The torch, having traveled through various states, including the Federal Capital Territory, was last received in Oyo State on Tuesday.

Wasiu Isiaka, Commissioner for Sports Development, confirmed the torch’s arrival at the Sagamu Interchange, where a brief ceremony will take place to mark its arrival.
The Torch of Unity was launched by President Bola Tinubu on March 26 in Abuja, emphasizing the power of sports to unite the nation and foster youth engagement.

Ahead of the 2024 National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games, Ogun State is committed to hosting the most spectacular edition in the festival’s history. Isiaka highlighted the state’s readiness, showcasing venues like the MKO Sports Complex and Alake Sports Centre, which will host various competitions.
Over 15,000 athletes are expected to participate in 549 events, vying for 2,150 medals. This year’s festival also introduces the Invited Junior Athletes category, allowing younger competitors to showcase their talents alongside seasoned athletes.
