Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, received the Torch of Unity in preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival, known as Gateway Games 2024.

The Torch was handed to Governor Abiodun by Dorcas Adesokan, a two-time gold medalist at the 2014 African Youth Games and Women’s Singles and Doubles Champion, at the City Gate on the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway.
Governor Abiodun highlighted that the Torch, which began its journey across Nigeria after being handed over to the President of the National Sports Commission by President Bola Tinubu, represents the shared hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians.

He said, “The Unity Torch, which started its tour across the country in March, symbolizes more than just the upcoming Gateway Games. It reflects our collective hope as a nation—where our diversity strengthens our unity and where our youth are empowered to excel on the world stage.
“For Ogun State, the Unity Torch embodies our mission to celebrate Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage. It is not only a symbol of sportsmanship but also a beacon of unity, peace, and the enduring spirit of every Nigerian.”
The governor emphasized that the festival aims to foster collaboration, friendship, and mutual respect while promoting unity in diversity—the core values of the National Sports Festival, which was established in 1973 to promote national unity, sportsmanship, resilience, and cohesion.

Receiving the Torch, Governor Abiodun reaffirmed Ogun State’s commitment to national unity, youth development, and celebrating the country’s rich diversity through sports.
“Hosting the festival for the second time, Ogun State is honored to receive the Torch of Unity. We are ready to showcase our vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and the exceptional talents of our athletes,” he added.

Abiodun expressed hope that the Torch would inspire love among Nigerian youth and serve as a symbol of unity for the entire nation.
The 22nd National Sports Festival officially kicks off on Friday with the arrival of state delegates, while the opening ceremony will be held on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
