Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has spoken publicly for the first time following a terrifying medical ordeal that saw him placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury during a recent Premier League clash between Forest and Leicester City, where a heavy collision with the goalpost initially seemed manageable. Despite his attempt to play on, further medical tests revealed the severity of the damage, prompting immediate surgery and a medically induced coma for stabilization.
Now on the road to recovery, Awoniyi is expected to miss the rest of the 2024/25 season. However, in a deeply emotional message shared on Instagram, the former Mainz 05 forward expressed gratitude for life, the support he’s received, and his determination to return stronger.
“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career, but through it all, I have felt the love,” Awoniyi wrote. “By the grace of God, I am grateful to be here still, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits.”

Awoniyi went on to thank his Nottingham Forest teammates, coaches, and staff for their visits and encouragement during his time in the hospital.
“To my teammates, coaches, staff, and the entire Forest family, thank you for your well wishes. Seeing you all on your visits to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say.”
He also sent a special message to fans and loved ones in Nigeria and beyond:
“To my family, friends, and football fans, thank you for the support. To everyone back home in Nigeria who has checked in on me, prayed for me, and left kind words—thank you. I see them, I feel them, and I carry them with me every day as I recover.”
“Wishing the boys the very best in these last two games. Keep believing and keep pushing. I’m with you all the way, and I can’t wait to be back out there doing what I love.”
Awoniyi’s message has sparked a wave of goodwill across social media, with fans, fellow players, and football authorities hailing his resilience and offering prayers for a full recovery.
In his absence, Nottingham Forest managed a crucial 2-1 win over West Ham on Sunday to maintain their 7th-place position in the Premier League, level on points with Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Forest will wrap up their season against Chelsea, likely without their spirited No. 9 on the pitch—but certainly not without his presence in spirit.
