Seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, after a section of the facility’s perimeter wall collapsed during a heavy overnight rainstorm on Tuesday.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, noting that the breach occurred around 2:00 a.m. due to the structural failure of the aging wall during the downpour.

In response, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. He also directed the launch of a manhunt to locate and rearrest the fleeing inmates.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service has launched an expansive manhunt following the rainfall that breached the security of its facility at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ilesa,” the statement said. “The force majeure, which occurred at about 0200 hours on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, led to the escape of seven inmates.”
The NCoS said it is working in close coordination with other security agencies and local community leaders to track down the fugitives and return them to custody.
The service also appealed to the public for assistance and urged anyone with relevant information to contact the nearest security agency or reach out through the following hotlines: 07087086005, 09060004598, or 08075050006.
Authorities reassured the public that security at the facility is being reinforced to prevent further incidents.
