A Tunisian national was shot dead by his 53-year-old neighbour in Puget-sur-Argens, southern France, with the prosecutor investigating the incident as a racially motivated crime.
The victim, believed to be around 35 years old, was killed on Saturday, while a 25-year-old Turkish national was shot in the hand and hospitalized.
The suspect, a sports shooter, had published hateful and racist content on social media before and after the killing.
France has seen a rise in racist and xenophobic crimes, with politicians’ rhetoric on migration and Islam sparking controversy.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the shooting, saying “racism must be severely punished”.
