The Democratic Republic of Congo’s media regulator has banned reporting on former President Joseph Kabila’s activities and interviews with members of his party.
The ban comes after Kabila’s return to the country last month amid heightened tensions with the government, led by President Félix Tshisekedi.
Kabila faces accusations of treason and alleged links to the M23 rebels, which he denies. Breaches of the ban could result in suspension.
The M23 spokesperson has stated that media outlets in areas under their control will not abide by the ban.
Kabila’s party has rejected the ban, describing it as “arbitrary.”
The move has been criticized by activists and analysts, who argue it constitutes an abuse of power and may pique people’s interest in Kabila’s activities.
