Professor Jibril Aminu, a renowned Nigerian intellectual, politician, and public servant, has passed away at the age of 85.
Aminu, who served as Minister of Education and Petroleum, as well as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, left a lasting legacy in medicine, education, and governance.
However, his legacy is also marked by controversy, including his role in suppressing student activism during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, notably expelling over 500 students from the University of Maiduguri in 1983.
The Supreme Court later ruled in favor of the students, stating that the university’s disciplinary panel had overstepped its authority in determining criminal guilt.
