Mali’s army has reported two attacks on military installations in the past 24 hours, with the Islamist militant group Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) claiming responsibility for one of the strikes.
The attacks are part of a recent surge in jihadist violence in the country, which has struggled to improve security since the junta seized power in 2020 and 2021.
On Thursday, JNIM claimed to have attacked a security post in Mahou, eastern Mali, near the border with Burkina Faso. The army has mobilized ground and air reinforcements to respond to the attack.
A separate statement from the army reported an attack on a military camp in Tessit, near the border with Burkina Faso and Niger, on Wednesday afternoon.
While there’s been no claim of responsibility for this attack, security analysts believe it could be the work of fighters from the Islamic State branch active in the Sahel region.
