The Nigeria Football Federation has given its official approval for the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a testament to the enduring legacy of the late Nigerian football icon.
This annual tournament, endorsed by the Senate Committee on Sports Developments led by Senator Abdul Ningi, aims to honor Okwaraji’s memory and contribute to the growth of grassroots football in Nigeria.
Okwaraji, who tragically collapsed and died during a 1990 World Cup qualifying match against Angola in 1989, left an indelible mark on Nigerian football.
The championship, set to kick off later this year, will adhere to FIFA rules and is expected to positively impact youths and football development nationwide.
The NFF commended the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation for its vision to promote grassroots football and appealed to organizers to follow FIFA guidelines.
