President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), has expressed satisfaction with the Super Eagles’ performances in recent international fixtures, stating that the Federation has met its key objectives from the team’s participation in the Four-Nation Unity Cup in London and the international friendly against Russia in Moscow.
Speaking after the conclusion of both matches, Gusau said the primary goal was to give the coaching staff, led by Finidi George, the opportunity to assess new talents ahead of future competitions, particularly the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“I can tell you categorically that we achieved our sporting objectives, which were the most important in this case,” Gusau said. “The main aim was to provide windows for the coaches to evaluate players who can strengthen the squad moving forward.”

The Super Eagles claimed the Unity Cup title after a 2-1 semi-final victory over Ghana and a penalty shootout win (5-4) against Jamaica, following a 2-2 draw in the final at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. They then battled to a 1-1 draw with Russia’s national team in Moscow, with Tolu Arokodare scoring Nigeria’s equaliser after an early own goal by Semi Ajayi.
Reflecting on the games, Gusau highlighted the emergence of new players such as Benjamin Frederick, Felix Agu, Christantus Uche, and Igoh Ogbu, as well as more exposure for Cyriel Dessers. He also praised home-based stars like Papa Daniel Mustapha, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, and Collins Ogwueze for their contributions.
“In Russia, we saw more of Uche and Arokodare’s goal showed his instinct as a striker. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was solid in his return, and captain William Troost-Ekong led the defence with composure,” Gusau said. “We now have options across all areas—defence, midfield, and attack.”

The NFF president believes the team is better prepared for upcoming challenges, stating that the technical crew will benefit greatly from the insights gained during the international window.
“With these performances and the depth we’ve now seen, I am confident the coaching staff has a broader pool to work with as we head into the crucial World Cup qualifiers,” he added.
