Nigeria has jumped to the third most powerful military force in Africa, according to the 2025 Global Firepower Index, surpassing South Africa which now ranks fourth.
Globally, Nigeria’s military ranking improved from 39th to 31st with a PowerIndex score of 0.57. Egypt and Algeria maintain their top spots in Africa with scores of 0.34 and 0.35, respectively.
The improved rating reflects Nigeria’s increased investment in military infrastructure, strategic procurement, and training, particularly in counter-terrorism and regional security operations.
Security expert Dr. Ayodele Balogun attributed the development to Nigeria’s efforts to address persistent threats from insurgent groups in the Sahel and across its borders, saying, “Stable nations like Nigeria are responding to internal and regional challenges by strengthening their military capabilities.”
This rise in military ranking also signals Nigeria’s repositioning as a regional stabilizer.
However, amidst this achievement, Nigeria has urged calm amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
Following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, the Federal Government condemned the violence and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
“The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran,” said Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, expressing grave concern over the potential implications for international peace and the global economy.
