The United Nations has condemned the recent killings of innocent civilians in Benue State, Nigeria, and called on the government to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
The UN’s Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, expressed his condemnation through his Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, who stated that the UN is monitoring the situation and hopes that those responsible for the violence will be found and brought to justice.
The condemnation comes amid growing outrage over the continued killings and the seeming inability of the government to halt the massacres.
Amnesty International has also decried the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region, warning that the Nigerian authorities must immediately end the almost daily bloodshed in Benue State and bring the actual perpetrators to justice.
President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to visit Benue State on Wednesday to assess the situation and meet with stakeholders to seek lasting solutions to the hostilities.
