The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its national secretary after a prolonged internal conflict.
The decision was announced by PDP’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, during a press conference at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Damagum explained that the party had no choice but to abide by the advice of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which had insisted on Anyanwu’s reinstatement.
The development comes after months of intense internal wrangling within the party, with some governors and stakeholders opposing Anyanwu’s leadership.
However, following a meeting with INEC on Tuesday, the PDP leadership decided to swallow the bitter pill and return Anyanwu to his position.
Damagum noted that the party’s survival is more important than individual interests and urged all stakeholders to support the decision.
As a result of the new development, the PDP has indefinitely postponed its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30, opting instead for an expanded leadership session to discuss critical issues and the party’s way forward.
