Nigeria is in talks to become the first African country to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix since South Africa in 1993.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has declared Nigeria’s interest in hosting the prestigious event, with Abuja as the proposed location.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko has appointed Opus Racing Promotions as the country’s official representative in negotiations with Formula 1.
Dikko also invited key figures in the global motorsport industry, including F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, to visit Nigeria and engage with government officials and private sector stakeholders.
Hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix would not only boost national pride but also strengthen Nigeria’s infrastructure, attract private investment, and create economic opportunities and jobs.
The bid is part of the country’s efforts to leverage sports for economic growth and national unity, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Shared Prosperity vision.
