More than 1,200 people have been arrested and five killed, including a police officer, in protests against rising fuel prices in Angola’s capital, Luanda.
The demonstrations, which began as a three-day strike by taxi drivers, escalated into widespread unrest with thousands of people blocking roads, looting shops, and clashing with police.
The protests were sparked by a 33% increase in diesel prices, which has driven up the cost of staple foods and other basics.
President João Lourenço has dismissed concerns, saying that the price of diesel in Angola remains low compared to other countries.
However, activists say that the fuel price issue is just a symptom of deeper public discontent, with many Angolans struggling with hunger and poverty.
The average monthly wage in Angola is just $75, and a promise to increase it to $100 has not materialized.
