Staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have declared an indefinite strike action, effective immediately, citing unresolved issues with the university management.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), announced the decision in a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

The strike notice was jointly signed by the leadership of the four unions. It directed all staff across LASU’s main campus and affiliate campuses — including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and LASU’s Epe campus — to immediately vacate their duty posts and withdraw their services.

The statement read in part: “Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU) that an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION should commence effective from Thursday 31st July, 2025, we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University.

“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of staff members are met by the appropriate authorities.”
The JAC expressed appreciation for the support of university management in the past, but emphasized that the action was necessary to push for the resolution of pending staff welfare issues.
This development comes just days before LASU students are scheduled to begin their second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session, which were slated to start on Monday. The strike is expected to disrupt the academic calendar unless an urgent resolution is reached.
