South African President Cyril Ramaphosa held a telephone call with US President Donald Trump to discuss bilateral trade, with both leaders agreeing to continue further engagements and detailed talks between their respective trade negotiating teams.
Despite months of effort, South Africa was unable to finalize a trade agreement with the US ahead of Trump’s deadline, resulting in a 30% tariff on South African exports to America, effective August 8.
The trade teams will now engage in more in-depth discussions, recognizing the various trade negotiations the US is currently involved in.
South Africa’s presidency emphasized the country’s commitment to advancing its trade interests and benefiting from increased investment.
