Nigeria’s D’Tigers began their quest for a second continental men’s basketball title in style on Wednesday evening, cruising past Madagascar 77-59 in their opening Group B game at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket in Luanda, Angola.

Coach Mohammed Abdulrahman’s men playing at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda, delivered a composed and dominant performance to secure an early advantage in the group, 10 years after their last African crown in 2015.

D’Tigers making their 20th AfroBasket appearance, wasted no time asserting their superiority over the Malagasy side, who were facing Nigeria for the first time since a 112–81 defeat in 2011.

NBA guard Josh Okogie, returning to the national team after three years, led by example with a commanding display at both ends of the court. The Houston Rockets star’s energy and creativity set the tone, while experienced campaigners Caleb Agada, Ike Nwamu, and veteran Stan Okoye provided stability and leadership.

Devine Eke, making his debut at a major tournament, impressed with his aggression on the boards and efficiency in scoring, justifying the hype after his standout AfroBasket qualifiers earlier this year.

Nigeria’s defense proved too tough for Madagascar to break down, with constant pressure forcing turnovers and limiting their shooting opportunities. By halftime, D’Tigers had opened a double-digit lead, which they maintained comfortably until the final buzzer.

The win puts Nigeria in a strong position ahead of tougher tests in the group stage, with the team eyeing a direct spot in the quarterfinals under the tournament’s format.

Elsewhere in the competition, defending champions Tunisia, hosts Angola, and top-ranked Senegal remain among the favourites, but Nigeria’s opening statement suggests they are ready to challenge for a second African crown.

D’Tigers will look to build on this momentum in their next group match as they continue their push for glory in Luanda.
