Twenty clubs are set to battle in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, which officially kicks off on Friday, August 22, 2025.

This campaign marks the 54th edition of Nigeria’s top-flight league and the 36th since it turned professional, with organisers promising a thrilling season under the current NPFL branding.
The curtain-raiser will see reigning champions Remo Stars begin their title defence against Rivers United at the Remo Stars Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

In a notable development, this season will feature four privately owned clubs—the highest since 2019. They include Remo Stars, Ikorodu City, Barau FC, and Kun Khalifat—underscoring the growing influence of private ownership in Nigerian football.
