A devastating explosion occurred in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria, claiming the lives of two children and injuring six others.
The incident happened when unsuspecting children brought an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) into their community, mistaking it for scrap metal.
According to eyewitnesses, the children dug out the IED and took it home, unaware of the danger it posed, resulting in the explosion that killed two children instantly.
The Borno State Police Command promptly responded to the incident, evacuating the injured victims to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for treatment.
ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, confirmed the incident but reported that one person was killed and six others injured. The police are intensifying community sensitization efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing threat posed by remnants of war, including mines, IEDs, and unexploded ordnance, in Borno State.
Despite military clearance operations, these devices continue to claim lives, particularly among children and scrap metal scavengers who often mistake them for harmless objects.
In recent months, similar incidents have occurred in other parts of Borno State, including Monguno and Jere Local Government Areas, resulting in loss of life and injuries.
