The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Thursday, August 21, for a supplementary election in Kaura-Namoda South Constituency, Zamfara State.
The announcement was made by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmuda Isah, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau, where he assured political parties and voters that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.
The decision follows the earlier declaration of the constituency’s by-election as inconclusive by Returning Officer Professor Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau.
Sa’adu explained that the margin between the leading party and the runner-up was smaller than the number of Permanent Voter Cards collected in polling units where voting was cancelled, hence the need for a supplementary poll.
INEC appealed to stakeholders, security agencies, and political parties to cooperate fully for the success of the election, while also reiterating its call for the establishment of an Electoral Offenses Tribunal to fast-track the prosecution of electoral offenders.
Meanwhile, political tensions have intensified as the Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rejected accusations by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it used military personnel to intimidate voters during the earlier poll. APC’s Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, dismissed the claims as baseless, insisting that security operatives were only deployed to maintain order and prevent malpractice.
He accused the PDP of attempting to tarnish the reputation of security agencies, adding that the strong voter turnout for the APC candidate was proof of the party’s popularity ahead of the 2027 general elections
