Nigeria will host a historic night of world-class boxing on Independence Day, as Balmoral Group Promotions partners with AK Promotions to bring global spotlight to African boxing.
The event, scheduled for Wednesday, October 1st, in Lagos, will be broadcast live worldwide on DAZN, making it a landmark moment for Nigerian sports as the nation celebrates its independence with an international showcase.
Dr. Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of Balmoral Group Promotions, described the event as a breakthrough for the continent. “This historic fight night on Nigerian Independence Day marks a monumental moment for African boxing. We are proud to partner with AK Promotions to showcase Nigeria’s immense talent and passion to the world, celebrating our heritage and potential on a global stage,” he said.
Former world champion and AK Promotions CEO, Amir Khan, said the occasion would inspire a new generation. “I’m thrilled to bring world-class boxing and the world’s eyes onto Nigeria for the first time. This is about more than just fights – it’s about inspiring a new generation and showcasing the heart and skill of Nigerian boxers alongside international stars. Lagos is ready to shine.”
Among the headline acts is Dan Azeez, a former British, Commonwealth, and European champion, who will fight in Nigeria for the first time in what he calls a “bucket list bout.”
“Fighting in Nigeria on Independence Day is a dream come true. This is for my heritage, my people, and my pride. I’m ready to put on a show and honour Nigeria with every punch I throw,” Azeez said.
The main event will see cruiserweight contender Brandon Glanton (20-3, 17 KOs) attempt to avenge his previous narrow defeat against Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding (30-3, 18 KOs). Fielding, returning after a three-year break, is determined to prove he is still world title material.
“After three years out, I’m back with a fire to claim my place at the top. Beating Glanton in Lagos will show everyone I’m ready for a world title shot,” Fielding said.
The co-main event features African boxing icon and former IBF world champion Richard Commey (30-5-1, 27 KOs) against Kazakhstan’s rising star Ray Seitzhanov (13-1, 9 KOs).
The Independence Day fight night supported by the National Sports Commission of Nigeria, represents the fulfillment of Dr. Adamu’s long-held vision of staging world-class boxing in Africa, with Lagos set to deliver an unforgettable spectacle.
