A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former head of the national financial investigation agency, to eight years in prison for embezzling public funds.
Engonga, popularly known as “Bello,” was found guilty of diverting funds meant for professional travel expenses for personal use and was fined $220,000.
The Bioko provincial tribunal delivered the verdict after finding him guilty of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars alongside five other senior officials.
Engonga’s case drew widespread attention last year when explicit videos featuring him with multiple women, including wives of other officials, surfaced online, sparking ridicule and parodies.
