President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train, which occurred on Tuesday shortly after departing from Abuja.
In a statement on his official X handle, Tinubu commiserated with the passengers, families of the injured, and all those affected, assuring that swift action and support would follow. “I am deeply saddened by this incident. My heartfelt prayers are with the injured, their families, and all passengers who went through this distressing experience,” he said.
Tinubu, currently in Brazil on an official visit, stated that he is staying updated on the developments and awaiting a full briefing to ensure prompt measures are taken to support the victims and prevent future occurrences.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route pending further notice. NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, has taken full responsibility for the derailment, promising transparency in the ongoing investigation. “Let me say, beyond apologizing to Nigeria, I want to say as the managing director and chief executive, I take full responsibility,” Opeifa stated.
Four passengers sustained serious injuries, while others were treated and discharged.
The NRC will follow up with all 618 passengers to monitor possible post-traumatic effects.
