Former Super Eagles striker, Anthony Ujah, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.
Ujah confirmed the decision on Friday through an emotional post on Instagram, revealing that he was stepping away from the sport with immediate effect.
The forward, who spent most of his career in Germany, has been without a club since leaving Botev Plovdiv in July after an injury-hit spell. During his one year at the Bulgarian side, he missed 40 matches due to a knee injury and managed just five appearances, scoring two goals.
“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football,” Ujah wrote. “I want to thank every club I played for, every coach who believed in me, and every teammate who fought beside me. Fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for my country is one I will forever cherish.”
Ujah is fondly remembered as a fan favourite at FC Köln, where he played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2014, famously celebrating a goal with the club’s goat mascot.
Across more than 15 years of professional football, Ujah scored 113 career goals, with the 2. Bundesliga title at Köln standing out as a career highlight.
On the international stage, he represented Nigeria seven times for the Super Eagles, though he did not score for the national team.
“Football has been more than a game for me; it has been my passion, my identity, my home,” Ujah added. “I will truly miss the atmosphere, the dressing room laughter, the celebrations, and even the hard days that made the good ones sweeter. A new chapter begins, but my love for football will never end.”
