Gunmen have abducted Ayodeji Akesinro, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, Ondo State, sparking widespread concern among health workers and residents. Akesinro, who is also a pastor, was taken from his residence at Upenme, Owo Local Government Area, around 7 pm on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
The National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) confirmed the incident and demanded Akesinro’s immediate release, warning of possible protests if the situation isn’t addressed.
The union’s statement expressed shock over the abduction and called for tighter security in Owo and its environs, as well as collaboration with security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.
Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, assured the public that security operatives, working alongside local hunters, are making concerted efforts to rescue Akesinro and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Lawal said, “The Area Commander, the DPO, and local hunters within that vicinity combed the bush throughout the night. I want to appreciate the local hunters there for at least giving the support to Nigeria Police in their bid to rescue the victims.” The police commissioner assured that the kidnappers will be arrested, and the victim will be safely rescued.
The union’s demands include Akesinro’s immediate release, improved security measures, and the apprehension of those responsible for the abduction.
Members of NUAHP may declare a day of protest in Owo if their demands aren’t met, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the need for swift action.
