The legislature of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has impeached its speaker, Matthew Yare, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillor representing Nyanya ward.

Yare was removed during a brief session on Monday, following a motion moved by Mathias Aliu, councillor for Wuse ward. The motion was put to a voice vote by Deputy Speaker Tony Onoja, with the majority voting in favour of Yare’s impeachment.
Subsequently, Jankaro Ibrahim of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who represents Kabusa ward, was elected as the new speaker.

Speaking to journalists after proceedings, Ibrahim explained that the decision reflected the APC’s new dominance in the council’s legislature.
“We are eight APC councillors, while the PDP has only four. It is only natural for us to lead,” Ibrahim said.
The development comes months after AMAC chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, defected from the PDP to the APC, further strengthening the ruling party’s influence in the council.
