Gabon took a major step toward a historic first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance after storming to the top of their qualifying group with a dominant 4-0 victory over Seychelles on Wednesday.

The Panthers, playing in neutral St. Pierre, Mauritius, were inspired by LAFC forward Denis Bouanga, who netted a stunning first-half hat-trick to put the match beyond doubt.

Bouanga opened the scoring inside four minutes, latching onto Teddy Averlant’s cross to finish from close range. He doubled the lead in the 34th minute with a composed strike from a cutback before completing his treble seven minutes before halftime with a fine volley from 10 yards.

The second half was less intense, but Gabon added a fourth in the 89th minute through Yannis M’Bemba, whose header just crossed the line to cap the emphatic display.

For Seychelles, ranked 203rd in the world and the lowest-ranked side in Africa, it was another tough outing. They remain without a single World Cup qualifying win in their history.

The result lifts Gabon two points clear at the top of Group F, though Ivory Coast—who have played one game fewer—can reclaim first place if they defeat Burundi at home on Friday.

The Panthers will then face the Elephants in Libreville next Tuesday in what promises to be a decisive showdown for the group’s sole automatic ticket to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
