Mali’s transitional government has filed a case against Algeria at the International Court of Justice, accusing its neighbor of aggression for shooting down a Malian military reconnaissance drone near their shared desert border.

The incident occurred on the night of March 31 to April 1 near Tinzaouaten in Mali’s Kidal region, with Mali alleging that Algeria’s actions were intended to hinder operations against armed groups.

The Malian government described the downing as a “blatant aggression” and a “hostile act” violating the principle of non-use of force.

Despite repeated requests for evidence that the drone violated Algerian airspace, Mali claims it received no response from Algerian authorities. Algeria, however, maintains that its forces shot down an armed surveillance drone that had entered its airspace.

This diplomatic dispute has strained relations between the two countries, with Mali recalling its ambassador from Algiers and filing a formal complaint against Algeria before international bodies.

The incident has also led to airspace closures between the two nations, further escalating tensions.
