Team Ekiti continued their fine form at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, on Thursday, clinching gold in the male basketball event after edging Team Lagos 19-18 in a nail-biting final.
The closely contested encounter saw both sides display grit and composure, but the Ekiti boys proved more resilient to snatch victory.
Reacting to the win, State Basketball Coach, Adetayo Awojinrin, lauded his players’ fighting spirit. “I am happy God crowned our efforts with success. Despite the tough matches we faced during the group stage, we managed to defeat Lagos in the final. I am proud of the team and believe this success will inspire them to win more gold medals in the future,” he said.

Elsewhere, Funbi Adedoyin won bronze in the Kungfu 48kg female category, with Head Coach Ronke Raji commending her determination against stiff competition.
Para athlete, Suleiman Abdulazeez, also shone brightly, bagging gold in discus and silver in shot put to add to Ekiti’s medal haul.
Three standout performers—Abdulazeez Suleiman, Ayo Olopon star Precious Ayodele, and cricketer Damilola Oni—have now been invited to their respective national federations for further development.
So far, Team Ekiti has secured two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, cementing their place among the standout teams at Asaba 2025.
